CREATE Young Person Skye talks about her trip with CREATE to NZ
At the beginning of July, CREATE young person Skye, went to New Zealand with CREATE on invitation of the Care Cafe for a series of key discussions about the care sector, information sharing and Connections events for children and foster carers. The Care Cafe is New Zealand’s network for children and young people with an out-of-home care experience. Here’s what Skye had to say about the experience:
“On day one we landed in Auckland and after checking out the hotel I was pretty keen to get started. We went out for dinner and talked about what we would do during the connection event and I felt very excited to actually do something. After some free time on day two in the morning we went to check out Clip and climb ready for the next day and when I saw it I was thrilled to learn I could have a turn on the climbing walls as well. We left Clip and climb and went to the Auckland information session. At first I thought it was going to be boring but listening to how everyone was so passionate about making a change in the care system for the better turned out to be very comforting and quite exciting, especially since everyone was truly interested and cared about what I had to say. This showed me that one day hopefully soon, NZ will also have a system that gives children a voice.
Day three was eventful in many ways. We had the connection event at Clip and climb and the kids loved it! After a fun day of climbing and eating pizza, we left for the airport to go to Wellington. We were all comfy in our beds at the hotel until the whole building began to shake and I realised I was in an earthquake! It was really scary! Day three started with stable ground. We got up for breakfast and talked about what would be happening for the day. We went to another information session which was similar to the first one. We talked about how we could get kids in care in NZ to have a voice. There was a slide show and yummy food too. After the information session we met with a man called Tan. He was very interested in helping CREATE and helping kids have a voice. We went back to the hotel before having a nice dinner.
Day four was a day to have some free time and do some shopping! We also went to the Museum of New Zealand which was epic!! The rest of the day I was flying. After five planes in five days, two hotels, two information sessions, a connection event and countless taxis, we were home and ready for an overdue sleep in.”
