Growing up and out of care
If you’re over 15 and either in or previously in the care of the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services, you may have heard of something called Transition to Independence or Transition from Care or just TFC.
Turning 18 and legally becoming an adult is an important time in your life - it’s where you ‘grow up’ a bit and learn how to be independent. It’s not always easy for young people in care to make the transition but there is help out there. Click here for more information.
But don’t just take our word for it... meet seven young people here who have made the transition from care to independence:
Need help with transitioning from care?
Give Youth Housing and Reintegration Service (YHARS) a call.
YHARS can assist young people at risk of homelessness, 12-21 years of age, by providing low rent housing and case management. Young people who have left care can access brokerage money to help reach their goals. It can be for a bond, TAFE/uni fees, computer, buying household goods etc. Ask your CSO to make a referral or contact the Office for Youth to find out where your local service is and if you're eligible. YHARS services can help you even if you’ve left care, up until the age of 21.

Speak Up Program
CREATE had the pleasure of training a new crew of Young Consultants at its Speak Up Program in July, August and October! The young people knocked our socks off with their impressive public speaking skills and their passion for making our child protection system better. Watch up for these superstars as they represent kids in care in the media, at meetings and worker trainings!
From a young person in care: ‘My name is Julia and in August I helped to co-facilitate SUP level 1 and level 2 training. In SUP training we learnt about the background of CREATE and what it means to be a Young Consultant. We learnt about what it means to be a leader and a follower. We also practiced some public speaking. It was a fun learning experience that I would recommend to anyone who is interested’
Report Card Launch
CREATE’s National Report Card was officially launched earlier this year. QLD CREATE hosted an awesome launch celebration and were lucky enough to have some truly talented Young Consultants help host the event and share their care experiences with everyone.
Out of the Box - Relationships, Sex and Sexuality
Young people discuss their experiences of receiving sexual health, sexuality and relationships education whilst in care.

NEWSFLASH: YOUNG PEOPLE in CARE DESERVE A SAY IN THEIR OWN LIVES
Involving children and young people in decision making processes is a responsibility shared across the child protection sector. The Children and Young People's Participation Strategy document offers advice, information and guidance designed to help the QLD child protection sector effectively engage children and young people in their own lives. It’s been written by an awesome group called G-Force: at G-Force young people with a care experience sit round the table with frontline workers as well as ‘big wigs” to work on how the BIG ISSUES for children and young people in care are fixed up.
What a great few months our Youth advisory Group has had. We’ve been lucky enough to get some AMAZING feedback from our young people that will help CREATE to make the child protection system better, all the while having a load of fun!
CREATE Your Future
The CREATE Your Future program (CYF) trekked to the Gold Coast for 2 nights under the stars at its CYF camp in April. Next up – Brisbane and Townsville!
